Leeds Echoes

In this series I’ll be exploring different aspects of Leeds rich history. Each episode I’ll tell a different story, whether it’s a particular building, an entire industry or a lost transportation network. Most importantly I want to try and figure out what the people who lived and breathed this history actually felt. What did the local butcher think? Or your neighbour? What did the city sound like? And what did it smell like? These are the kind of things I want to explore and I’m excited where the journey will take me. Hopefully I’ll see some of you on the way. Leeds Echoes "Walk Through Time" is a special 4 part series of my podcast that’s been supported by Leeds Civic Trust and Heritage Open Days. It represents my first real attempt at creating these episodes whilst really thinking about someone listening on location. They’re my attempt at a more accessible walking tour. Take them at your own pace. Listen on location in any way that’s accessible to you. I’ve focused on 4 areas that represent a couple of intersecting things - places both I and others have sought solace during lockdowns, places newcomers to Leeds often experience first and places that younger people might most associate with. At any rate, I hope you enjoy them. Intro Song: Words from the History of the Manchester Ship Canal Vol 2 by Sir Bosdin Leach (1907).Recorded on the 1984 lp ‘Hooks & Nets’ by Ian Woods & Charley Yarwood (Traditional Sound Recordings TSR044). Leeds Liverpool Canal episode.
